The Vagina Monologues: The V-Day Edition - Eve Ensler
It has been almost a year since I was part of an ensemble that performed the Vagina Monologues for the first time at my school. While I absolutely support the knowledge, message and support of women and women's issues that Eve Ensler tries to promote with her collection of monologues it is hard to get past how bad her writing is. Some of the stories don't flow, but jump jarringly from one thought to another. Her metaphors are generally over-wrought and/or nonsensical. I had the hardest time memorizing my monologue word for word because the phrasing was so off kilter. I likened it to trying to read the lyrics to Informer by Snow. My brain automatically tried to correct what it was reading. Some of the monologues felt just plain inappropriate, turning a woman's story into something it wasn't. In the end this has the forced, over-worked feeling of someone trying desperately hard to be poetic and poignant.
